Obituary of Thomas Jarvis

SUGAR GROVE VIRGINIA: THOMAS ELMER JARVIS, age 89, died Monday, March 17, 2014 at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia. He was born in Sparta, North Carolina and attended Alleghany High School where he excelled in basketball and baseball. After graduation he met and married his lifetime mate, Eva "Toots" Cox of Sugar Grove, Virginia. Elmer later served in the United States Army. While in the Army he fought in World War II and was also a Silver Gloves Boxer. Elmer was a master carpenter and retired from United States Steel Corporation in Gary, West Virginia where he had worked as master carpenter and warehouse manager. He attended Sugar Grove Baptist Church and was an avid gardener who was known for his delicious softball size tomatoes. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva; daughter, Margaret J. Springer; parents, Audie and Kelly Jarvis; one brother, Earl Jarvis; and two sisters, Bernice Edwards and Hazel Joines. Elmer is survived by three sons, Thomas Cox Jarvis and wife, Linda of Madison, Alabama, Terry Daniel Jarvis and wife, Rhonda of Bristol, Virginia, and William Jeffery Jarvis of Salem, Virginia; one daughter, Eva Louise Jarvis of Fairfax, Virginia; ten grandchildren, Pam Calkins of Springfield, Virginia, Lisa Chik of Littleton, Colorado, DuWayne Shearer of Aurora, Colorado, William, Maggie and Adam Jarvis and their mother, Lori Jarvis all of Radford, Virginia, Kendall and Brennan Jarvis of Bristol, Virginia, Christopher Hatcher of Memphis, Tennessee, Gregory Hatcher of Pensacola, Florida.. The family would like to thank the staff of the Veterans Care Center in Salem, Virginia and Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie, Virginia and Sugar Grove Baptist Church for their loving care of Mr. Jarvis. They would also like to express their appreciation to Mr. Jarvis's special friends, William H. Pence, Darlene and Ray Gauvreau, Carolyn Copeland, Craig Walker and Crystal "Sugar Grove" Morrell. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at Sugar Grove Baptist Church with Reverend Billy Gwinn officiating. Burial will follow in Hutton-Cox Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday, from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at 3:00 p.m. at Sugar Grove Baptist Church. In lieu of Flowers, donations may be made to the Francis Marion VFW Post #4667, P.O. Box 767, Marion VA 24354. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the family at www.seaverbrown.com. Seaver-Brown Funeral Service and Crematory is serving the Jarvis Family.
