Obituary of Dallas Brown
MARION, VIRGINIA: DALLAS LLOYD BROWN, age 84
December 29, 1928 - March 15, 2013
Respected teacher, coach, and mentor, Dallas Brown, left this earthly home in peace on March 15, 2013. Born to Dewey Lee and Cecelia O'Grady Brown near Black Lick (Wythe County), VA, Dallas grew up on a farm, served in the U.S. Air Force as a medic during the Korean Conflict, and graduated with a BA in Science from Lenoir Rhyne College ('50). He worked as a traveling pharmaceutical salesman (Parke, Davis & Co.), showed horses, and raised cattle as a young man. Dallas served the Smyth County school system for 36 years, teaching earth science and biology and coaching at both R.B. Worthy and Marion Senior High Schools. In the 1980s, Coach Brown guided a number of Hurricane tennis teams to victory, and will forever be missed as a source of inspiration and guidance.
Dallas was a past president of the Kiwanis Club of Marion, an active member of the Holston Hills Country Club, a member of the Francis Marion VFW Post #4667, and a founding member of the Grassroots Conservancy of Smyth County, Inc. He served as a deacon of Christ Episcopal Church and enjoyed helping others and singing in the choir. In retirement, he worked with volunteers and Job Corps students during the development of the Marion Riverwalk, and loved golfing, tennis, card-playing, and breakfast with good friends.
Dallas' passing was recently preceded by that of his sister, Dr. Barbara Bowles, and he is survived by siblings, Peggy Sisserson (Georgia), and Frank Brown. Sr. (Penhook, Va); three daughters, Terri Brown (Knoxville), Diana Blackburn (Damascus), and Dr. Jennifer Quesinberry (Marion); four grandchildren, Grayson Blackburn, Nicholas Stiefel, Brittany Stiefel and Zachary Morris; as well as numerous in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and very special family friends.
A celebration of Dallas' life will be held at Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church (Marion), with Reverend Ed Schaak and Reverend Emily Edmondson officiating; followed by a graveside service at Black Lick Cemetery (Corinth Lutheran Church) in Wythe County. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with a reception following from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at The Garden Party (Marion).
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dallas Brown's memory can be made to the Black Lick Cemetery Association (214 East Buck Ave., Rural Retreat, VA 24368) or to Christ Episcopal Church (401 W. Main St., Marion, VA 24354).
